URGENT UPDATE
Our server [Port (Going) Nowhere] has just reached a new low. There is a person galavanting around the galaxy as "Justin-bieber".
...Why didn't I think of this??
In other news:
The Consular hate continues. I guess some people will never get over the fact that we get the coolest hats in the game.

Life as a Jedi Consular
= NO RESPECT!
Ok, you're right... I'm being mellow-dramatic. C2-N2 respects you. Well, if he had feelings he would. But he doesn't so you'll just have to settle for the 001010011s that FEEL respectful... How sad that the most valuable of my slaves (aka "companions") is a steward droid for my ship. But more on that later...
What prompted my outburst you might ask? Well, I finally got around to finishing my class quest and to put it into too few words: I was wholly underwhelmed. Foolish of me, I know, to hope that after all the hum-drum, annoying, pointless, and illogical to the point of being infuriating quests and seemingly uninspired story arc's I had to complete to get there, that the end would justify the means... that I would dare to hope they had saved the best for last... that maybe, just maybe, there would be some kind of payoff that would have made it all worth it.
This is where Bheez reminds me for the umpteenth time that this is supposed to be "the thinking man's class". [Insert Laugh Track Here]
Just a note: This write up does not reflect my feelings on actual class mechanics or game play (it gets better at 50). I am actually enjoying my Sage in PvP now that I have a bit of gear and Bheez says he's very happy playing his Shadow so there you have it.
[STORY SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT- YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! BUT PLEASE READ ANYWAY SINCE IF YOU ROLLED THIS CLASS YOU'RE PROBABLY SPACEBARRING THROUGH THE STORY ANYWAY.]

Companion Choices (spoiler alert)
Ok girls, I'm gonna be blunt. If you're thinking you want to romance Corso, take his name, give him everything the universe has to offer (even tho he has you and that should be enough!), think again! Oh sure, it all seems nice and romantic, but once you say "I Do", he dont! Well, he does, but after the vows, that your friends don't even get to see, unless you hire yourself as your photographer and SS EVERYTHING (yes I did, shad up!), he'll send you a few mails here and there in the first week and that is it! So ladies, the next time you go to your ship and Corso wants to make out, you tell him to go make out with Risha (that way, they get married and you get rid of no good jerk face Corso and dat crazy batch Risha! 2 birds 1 stone). Just remember ladies, we're smugglers, we can always go to another planet and smuggle a hawtie!
Take a tip from Amy Whinehouse. Just say "no, no, no"!

Broke? Homeless? Destitute?
Well let's review your spending habits: Twi'lek hookers, portable helium canisters, SWtoR subscription, T-Pain mic...
Hmmmm. It looks like that T-Pain mic just pushed you over your budget, how irresponsible of you (especially since you didn't get me one, jerk). Well you're beyond my help... Kidding! You're just my type, too desperate to say no. But I digress.
You can be well on your way to becoming wealthy by following these three simple steps:
1. Cut a hole in a box
2. Put your junk in that box-- OH SORRY, wrong 3 step plan.
AHEM.
1. Watch this video on how to acquire a pink power crystal:
2. Sell said pink crystal on the trade market (easily done for upwards of 50k credits).
3. Swear your undying loyalty to me, The Dread Pirate of the Outter-Rim, Eternal Sovereign, Illustrious Master Slicer, Evil Overlord Glynnia, (LORD GLYNNIA for short). Upon which I will require you to abandon all earthly possessions to my care, effectively entering you into a Master/Slave relationship. Don't worry, you'll be quite comfortable in my cargo hold with my Liztard until I have need of you.
And if you've successfully followed my easy three step plan you should now be wealthy with the knowledge that you are one of the elite few to receive a backhand from yours truly.
xo Glynnia
[SRS FOOTNOTE: You can sell these crystals for a good amount of credits. They are unique, but they sell quickly. Most of the steps can be done solo and the final step to forming the crystal can be done easily in a 4 man group. I suggest you be level 48+ to complete this chain. So really, now you have no excuse to not have your final level of speeder bike training, slacker!]

NIGHT OF THE LIVING D-E-D, DEAD (An Epic MSN Paint RP Story)
Dear Journal, (WARRIORS DON'T WRITE IN DIARIES K)
Kaon Under Siege - 11:34pm
Bravo Leader Bheezem has already fallen to the ravenous effects of the Rakghoul plague. Apparently a disgruntled McDonald's employee had sabotaged his Double Quarter Pounder with cheese.
He was swiftly dispatched of.
Keeta is unable to control her limbs as she White Girl dances on top of a counter, proclaiming it's Friday, Friday, that we should all get down on Friday.
It is Sunday.
Glynnia is abnormally quiet, you know, the type of quiet that fills the room when you're about to upchuck. Has the Hot Shot Pilot also contracted the plague? I, Shirley the Token Alien, have to know.
No, everything checked out. She was just being a st~upid batch per usual.

Kaon Under Siege (hard mode) guide
This is our footage from hard mode kaon under siege, minus the bonus boss on hard mode. (We got owned miserably due to lack of gear)
Boss fights
The Gauntlet- 0:00-1:53
Have 1 dps mount the turret while the rest gather around it and defend it(this also makes it easier for aoe heals and tanks to grab aggro)
Kill the infected mercanaries first, otherwise their constrict will cost you dearly when they add up over time, the infected screamers are also a pain in the ass with the knock back. Bloaters are meh, but you still have to kill them, and when you do if you don't do it right you'll pay for it.
Take bloaters away from the group so that when they start to blow up at around 20% they don't hit your group with their devastating dot and damage, DO NOT HIT THEM WITH THE TURRET AS THE TURRET WILL KILL THEM BEFORE THEY GET A CHANCE TO BE MOVED
rinse and repeat, thats about it for this fight
Rakghoul Behemoth- 1:54-3:31
He spawns up on the platform, melee tanks be careful when approaching. He pretty much back hands you down the steps if you dont use some kind of range pull
Kite him around the park in a square motion, passing him by the explosive barrels and blowing them up when he gets close. (We had a designated barrel blower kerploder) Repeat this by kitting him around until he's dead.
WARNING: It is very hard as a melee tank to keep aggro on him without getting hit by him, its ok to get smacked around a bit, but while he is frenzied it's best not to tempt fate, save any high threat ranged attacks you have for his frenzy phases.
Super Soldiers- 3:32-5:14
The video says it all, there is 3 soldiers, the only one who has an aggro table is the trooper, the other two will randomly switch focus attacks to different players, with the juggernaut having no special abilities minus enrage and the big guy having an enrage, and a channeled stun.
Kill the big guy first, and prepare for adds around the time he dies, (it is better to have the tank kite the adds then to straight up tank them). Kill the adds and kill the second mini boss. The main guy is interruptable and tauntable, its a simple tank and spank
Bonus Boss- 5:15-8:00
easy fight on normal, not so much on hard mode(VERY healing intensive)
You don't have to, but we pulled him back to the pillar so we could kill the adds and line of sight the boss at the same time, the only things to remember for this boss are to run out of GRAPPLE and to kill the adds when they spawn.
Friday Freebie
It's Friday, yeees!
So I sometimes catch myself away from the computer, you know those odd moments where you have to leave the house for essential life sustaining items (aka a McFlurry run). Or maybe waiting between class or heck even IN class, or at work... workin' hard. You get the idea. Sometimes I need to satisfy my gaming urges while I'm other places than in front of my comp and if you have a smartphone (liberally applied term- 1st gen Nexus boo) and you have access to the Anroid Marketplace then you're in luck.
A Knights Dawn is a medieval fantasy turret defense type game. It has a good story, unlockable perks and four difficultly levels, upgradeable units and the graphics are great! The best part is that it's free! And it's not one of those "free" games that if you want extra neat stuff you have to buy points with your real money- I mean it has the option but everything in the game is obtainable through the game play as well so that's a plus.

SWtoR UPDATES: Patch 1.1
Some nice changes were made to the Tregg and Malgus fights for The False Emperor, the latter should definitely help groups lacking knockbacks.
And then there was this...
The False Emperor
- The Sith Entity's affliction ability now properly deals damage in Hard Mode.
- HK-47 now has the correct amount of health in Normal Mode.
- Tregg no longer immediately initiates his whirlwind attack after leaping to a player target. Players now have more time to react and avoid whirlwind damage.
- Corrected an issue that caused Jindo Krey to randomly target players with his blaster attack. He now focuses those attacks on his primary target, making him "tankable" as intended.
- Players can now acquire special Pulse Grenades outside of Darth Malgus' throne room. These grenades aid groups lacking knockback abilities in defeating him.
And then there was this...
Your Sand Crawler lives to see another day Sel....... >:|
- Vanity pets can no longer be considered targets for any abilities.
The big baddie- Darth Malgus
Abilities:
- Push back
- Leap
- Smash
- Doubt
- Empowered Choke
- Vengeful Strikes
- Unlimited Power
- Force Lightning
This fight is all about
positioning. If your group can master where they should be at the right times
then your success will come much more easily.
Have your tank move
Malgus to the lower end of the stairwell that is directly behind Malgus when
you first engage him. The tank's back should be to this wall. The rest of the
group should have their backs to the wall opposite. The reason for this is to
avoid being thrown over the side of the space station (it's really
quite embarrassing) by his Push back ability. Push backs should not be
mistaken for Knock backs- I did not have my casts interrupted by this
ability so that's a plus.
Malgus will randomly
Leap to a player, apparently his ugly face strikes fear into your heart and
you subsequently shed some HP (try closing your eyes next time!). He
is also going to use Smash, which is an AoE ability that does a good amount of
damage (upwards of 2k each time), so if you don't need to be in melee range of
him consider yourself lucky.
A random player will be
afflicted by Doubt, there will be an emote to indicate who the lucky one is.
This person will sit in a stun for what seems like an obscene amount of time.
It is important for this person to be healed up quickly and shielded
if available before Malgus uses his Empowered Choke which will render
everybody but the person afflicted with Doubt useless and airborne- whee!
Malgus does next to no damage during this time.
While most of the group
is being choked the person with Doubt will have to face Malgus one on one, he
will swing his lightsaber at you in addition to using Vengeful Strikes twice.
We found there are two ways to handle this. The first being to tank it with the
use of interrupts and/or defensive abilities which works pretty well
unless your gear was made out of left over gift wrapping and scotch tape
(/eyesKitty). If that isn't working out too well you can simply kite him, we
pathed him up the stairs and around the base of his throne and then led him
back to the tank. By the time this circuit was complete the Empowered
Choke was over and everybody could move back into their positions. Treat kiting
him like you would towing a trailer- if you make too sudden a turn he could
fishtail or flip and get stuck and then everybody would be pissed at you when
he resets. :D
Once Malgus hits about
40% you will need to watch out for an ability he uses called Unlimited Power,
it is a 3 second cast. He can, and most likely will, use
this immediately following the end of the Empowered Choke/Vengeful
Strikes phase. Be ready to interrupt this, failure to do so will
result in the death of your group via massive AoE damage. He will do this again
around 20%.
Now for the fun part.
Malgus will start
channeling Lightning around 9% and become immune to damage, however, while he
is doing this he will be vulnerable to knock backs and grip
abilities. Have the tank start to move him toward side of the bridge at
around 15% hp. Everybody needs to be mindful of their positioning because he
will continue to use his Push back ability while he is
being re-positioned. You should make use of the bridge's architecture to
reduce the risk of being thrown off.
You must time at least
two knock backs to go off (with Malgus facing the appropriate direction of
course) either at the same time or within a second of each other in order
to successfully knock Malgus off. And even then your results might not be
typical. We executed this perfectly on one attempt only to have him fly
back up and wipe us with more lightning. So don't be discouraged if you
experience something similar, there are still a bunch of bugs to be worked out.
Now we haven't tested this, but in theory you could also use a pull to ability
while teetering on the ledge and then follow up with a knock back. You could
also try knocking him back and then having your tank suicide jump and use a
pull to ability while falling (that would be so epic). We have NOT tried these
methods, but feel free to have some fun with it!
It's important to note
that if he is in-between lightning channels he will be immune to
knock backs and pulls again so you MUST time these abilities to happen at the
same time and while he is channeling. If you don't manage to knock him off by
the second channel you are most likely dead- the damage at the end of the fight
is not meant to be healed through. You can buy yourself some time by using
defensive abilities such as the Smuggler's AoE damage reduction shield.
There is no TLDR
version- I am picking the dark side option to make you suffer! Happy trails~!

Sith Entity (optional)
Abilities:
- Force Lightning
- Mass Lightning
- Knockback
- Spawn Adds
Note: Hopefully Bioware
will change this, but, if you feel iffy about your group downing this boss and
want to attempt to go back after you have tried your hand at defeating Malgus
you're in for some bad news. Using the elevator console after the Malgus
encounter will crash your game, repeatedly. If you're on the fence, just
give it a go otherwise you might regret not having at least tried. If your
DPS is low you will hit the enrage timer rather quickly on this one. GL!
This is an uncomplicated
fight, tank and spank the Sith Entity. When he spawns his three adds, you can
either split DPS or focus- depends on what your group is comfortable
with. Interrupting the caster's lightning abilities will greatly
reduce outgoing damage. You should not have to go through more than three add
phases for this encounter.

Abilities:

fight could easily be mistaken for a trash pull. You can breathe a sigh of
relief now! Take out the two guards accompanying him
and interrupt Spinning Strikes.

HK-47
Abilities:
- Burst
- Snipe
- Sticky Missiles
- Turret Fire
- Grapple
Activated @ 40% and
below:
- Stealth
- Poison Grenade
- Stab
Before we get into the
nitty-gritty of this fight you should know the following: if your group's DPS
is on the lower end of the scale, you will be hitting enrage timers that will
make it nearly impossible to progress through the boss encounters from this point
on. We were victim to this several times, our solution was to have our healer
contribute to DPS by maintaining DoTs and ignoring turrets (more on that
below).
Tank HK where he stands,
you don't really have a choice seeing as trying to LoS him into the
elevator room opposite him leads to him spamming Grapple on your group members.
Have the tank move so
that HK's back is to the group, this will help reduce Burst damage that happens
regularly on whomever has aggro. There have been reports that if a ranged
player gets aggro HK will Grapple them into melee range and use this ability as
well, we have not seen this happen but then again our ranged can't pull aggro
with low DPS (ah, the silver lining). This ability is a channeled AoE cone
effect.
Ranged should position
themselves leapfrog to each other to easily shake off the sticky missiles.
Players can remain stationary until the blue aura under their feet turns red,
then it's time to move out of the area. This is where the leapfrog positioning
comes in handy, your ranged simply have to move a short distance to the left or
right to avoid damaging themselves or others.
Pro tip: If you're in
the mood to gain style points and your group has strong
DPS you can have the players targeted by sticky missiles run to a shielded
turret and drop it there to destroy the shield- you can then DPS it down and
remove that element from the fight. My personal
suggestion is, don't bother! The damage output of the turrets is
inconsequential and unless you have extra DPS to throw around you really can't
afford to change focus lest you hit the dreaded enrage timer.
HK will
cast Snipe (cannot be interrupted) on a
party member which is a pretty hard hitting ability. In our experience it
seemed that he used this mostly on the person with second highest threat so if
you can predict where this ability is going to land you can anticipate throwing
out a force shield to negate some of it if your group has access to that
ability. We tried using Guard but this seemed to have no effect- don't waste
the globals throwing it around.
At 40%
you activate Phase 2.
HK will
go into Stealth mode and stun/sap one of your party members. Group up as soon
as he uses Stealth and use AoE abilities to knock him out. If you are grouped
up nice and tight this will work consistently. If not, well RIP random sap
victim. By knocking him out you avoid the Stab damage (which will nearly always
kill the player if they are not topped off and shielded in some way- at least
at our gear level) as well as avoiding the Poison Grenade which will be tossed
on a random player and should be cleansed as quickly as possible. Once he is
knocked out of Stealth go ahead and spread out again, rinse and repeat.
TLDR: Have the tank position HK-47 so that his back is to the group.
Using absorb abilities on party members is highly benficial in this encounter.
When the blue projected texture appears beneath a player's feet move away from
others and then out of it once it changes to red. Ignoring turret fire is fine-
perhaps throw Guard on your healer if it helps them. At 40% group up when HK-47
goes into Stealth. AoE once his sap/stun lands on a party member to knock him
out. If you are unsuccessful in
doing so you will have to deal with increased group damage from Stab and Poison
Grenade that could potentially ruin your chances for a successful down.
(Damn
even the TLDR is long- srs bizness.)

Prototypes A-14 & B-16 (mini-boss)
Abilities:
- Simulation Mode
Yes, ok, I will admit
when we first stumbled upon these giant droids we were a bit intimated, but
fear not! They are really just giant hairless Wookies looking for a hug...
yeah, I'm sorry but I wouldn't believe that either. The are, however, easy to
dismantle!
Basically it's a tank
and spank. From what we saw the only noteworthy ability is Simulation Mode,
this is when one of the droids will become immune to all damage and stand
still. During this time the droid will have a ranged attack that will hit
random party members for substantial chucks of HP, usually about 1.5k.
Simulation Mode is easily identifiable by the large blue circle under the
droid's feet.
The tank should pick up
the droid that is "active"- meaning the one that doesn't have the
large blue circle under it. DPS should hit this one really hard. Alternate as
they go active and inactive. Force bubbles are extra useful in this fight,
use'em if you got'em.
Pro tip: Standing in the
blue circle will reduce group damage (no range attack victims if they are
standing inside), have the tank position the active droid accordingly.

Jindo Krey
Abilities:
- Stun/Knockdown
- Grapple
- Flame Sweep
This encounter has an
added element of drama- the bounty hunter's ship is apparently possessed and
intensely loyal OR Jindo has a C2-N2 piloting (I wouldn't doubt it). You will
need to disable the ship's ability to alter your molecular structure by
expertly manipulating the conveniently located consoles on the bridge
(there are three) where the encounter takes place.
When the ship is close
you need to click on the console it is in front of to fire zee missiles! Once
the missiles have been successfully fired you will be notified with a
screen message, "Ship targeting system disrupted! Target lock
reset!". When the ship is settled in the distance it will fire missiles
that are, and should be, easily avoidable- there will be red and blue projected
textures indicating the missile's trajectory. Pro tip: if your tank is
capable have him/her position Jindo inside this area to eliminate his immunity
shield if it's up. If not, it's still perfectly fine, we didn't figure
this out during our first run and we still downed him.
We found that having our
healer (yours truly) and our ranged DPS BOTH interacting with the consoles
allowed for a much smoother encounter. The reason being that Jindo will Grapple
or Stun/Knockdown the person interacting with the panel, so having two people
doing it simultaneously saves a lot of time and minimizes group
damage. Eventually you'll have damaged the ship enough that it quits life and
you are only left to deal with Jindo.
Other than the ship
mechanics you must have an interrupt rotation on Flame Sweep. This fight can easily get out of control
if this ability goes off too many times. I have it on good authority that most
if not all classes have an interrupt so take advantage of that.
TLDR: Have 2 ranged
(heals/dps) click the console in front of the ship when it is in close range,
avoid shiny things on the ground, interrupt Flame Sweep, profit.

Tregg the Destroyer
Abilities:
- Knockback
- Whirlwind
- Leap
These abilities are very
standard issue, just remember to be aware of your position in relation to the
boss' so you don't get punted off the bridge. When he leaps you want to make
sure you run away immediately just incase he starts "Whirlwind
Slash". If you have participated in this encounter on normal mode you'll
know it does a good deal of damage and it does a good deal MORE damage in the
HM encounter. Whirlwind Slash is NOT interuptable so be sure to bring
your runnin' shoes!

Also, in patch 1.1 they delayed Tregg's use of Whirlwind Slash after Leap to give you more time to GTFO tha wey! Actual wording was less colorful, see here: http://welfaregamers.blogspot.com/2012/01/swtor-updates-patch-11.html

SWtoR Hardmode Guide to The False Emperor
We ran this with a group
setup of two Jedi Consulars (tank & heals), Jedi Knight (dps), and Smuggler
(dps). It's important to note that if you don't have at least two people
with a knock back ability, or a mob pull to & knock back, you might not be
able to down the big baddie, Darth Malgus.
For ease of viewing, I’m
going to create a new post for each boss encounter- they will be labeled in the
headers.
Note: Bheez is working
on getting footage from these encounters to add to the write-up, but for now
you'll just have to settle for reading without pretty pictures... Hey, don't
shoot the messenger!
The False Emperor boss
list:
Tregg the Destroyer
Jindo Krey
Prototype A-14 and
Prototype B-16 (mini-boss)
HK-47
Chondrus Berani
(mini-boss)
Sith Entity (optional)
Darth Malgus
(dun-dun-duuun)
Let's begin!

Hard Mode - The False Emperor (Behind the Scenes Footage)
Potential Performance Increase
Now for those of you who are already scraping the bottom of the barrel for graphics performance increasers or having been gaming for awhile, you probably already know that the lower quality graphics you set your settings to, the better off you are. This includes disabling things like bloom, conversation depth of field, etc, etc.
However one thing that I found http://sithwarrior.com/forums/Thread-SWTOR-Low-Framerate-Issues?page=2 <here, was that even if you have set your graphics to the lowest of the low settings you may not be getting your fps's worth.
The weird and almost nonsensical fix that worked for me and other people in that thread was the following.
Open your graphics tab and set the graphics preset to high, now hit apply.
After your computer has a brief heart attack, set the preset to low, disable bloom and conversation depth of field, and then turn shadow quality to OFF.
Hit apply once more.
This should increase your game's fps and for me it made pvp and flashpoints smooth again, let us know if this works for you!

And so it begins...
So last night we decided to run our very first hard mode flashpoint. Sel has got an unhealthy fixation with Darth Malgus so we thought we would humor her and try our luck in The False Emperor located on Ilum.
The deets-
Sel had been fifty for a week before Bheez, Kitty, and myself caught up. You would think she would have spent this time gearing up, but noooo. She spent this time moonlighting on a RP server. Turns out Bheez and I were the most geared of our group with 4 entry level epics between the two of us, a few greens and mostly blues ranging from level 35 to 50. Sel was the next best geared with mostly blues and a few greens of varying levels. And then there was Kitty... poor, poor Kitty. She was MISSING GEAR and had mostly greens! (Rumor has it she vendored her valuables to lavish fancy gifts on her companion.)
We had been doing flashpoints together while leveling and had been excited at the idea of doing the level 50 FPs once we all hit level cap. To be honest, the normal mode FPs are pretty easy, even if you have a DPS that is missing gear!
The main difference between normal mode and hard mode FPs is that you really need to utilize CC for most trash pulls, which really isn't a big deal. You could probably get away with doing less of it if your gear was better as well.
Currently there is little to no information available on boss strats for SWtoR. This is where we ran into the most trouble. The stuff we did find seemed to either be in really bad Engrish or coming from the perspective of a group of superiorly geared players- and conveniently missing key mechanics.
It was with this realization that we knew there was a niche to fill and Welfare Gamers was born. No, we don't have super-duper computers (cause we sometimes have to pay bills and eat things other than ramen), and no we don't have a crazy high end guild to carry us through content, but that is a nice thought... And no, we don't have tremendous amounts of skill, although Bheezem would not appreciate me speaking for him. All we have is each other. And these brownies- that are made with love. :)
In the posts to come we will be covering the boss strats that we have used along with visuals so you can see just what we're workin' with. We hope this info serves you and your group well so that you don't have to go for broke like we did. And if you're curious, info related to our setups are located in the Getting to Know Us section.
To sum it up (the TLDR version)-
Average group gear level: Borderline deficient
Bosses down: All but one, the optional one at that
Time spent: Too damn long
Cost: We were so broke by the time we finished this FP that we had to carpool back to the Repubic Fleet

PS- Yes, my graphics settings are on low!
